125th BIRTH ANNIVERSARY OF JAWAHARLAL NEHRU India’s struggle for independence is the story of many people, who sacrificed their lives for our great nation. Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru was one, who led the masses against the imperial power. Pt. Nehru was the son of Motilal Nehru, the renowned lawyer of India. He was born on November 14, 1889, at Allahabad. After his initial education in India, he was sent to England for Higher Education at the age of fifteen. He returned to India in 1912 and plunged straight into politics. Pt.Nehru was instrumental in moving the famous Quit India Resolution in the 'All India Congress Committee' session in Bombay on 7 August 1942. He became the first Prime Minister of independent India. He was the first Prime Minister to hoist the national flag and to make his iconic speech "Tryst with Destiny" from the ramparts of the Red Fort. He was the first Chairman of the Planning commission of India. Apart from his stress on secularism and on the basic unity of India, despite its ethnic and religious diversities, Nehru was deeply concerned with carrying India forward into the modern age of scientific discovery and technological development. He had an immense love for children because of which his birthday is celebrated as Children's Day in India. He supported and generated a way for India's education by envisioning the top tier institutions of India including the IITs, AIIMS, and India's first Space Program etc. Nehru who was also a great writer authored prominent books entitled "The Discovery of India" and "Glimpses of World History."
